On behalf of the University of California, Irvine (UCI), I wish to express my strongest support for the UCI ADVANCE Program for gender equity.
A grant from the National Science Foundation enables us to launch an ambitious and sweeping program, with an added core mission of testing hypotheses, devising best practices, and disseminating those results. This focus not only brings scientific rigor and visibility to the program, it also brings the expectations and oversight of the NSF. The ADVANCE Program will help us identify and then remove barriers within our environment and to create appropriate mentoring practices such that everyone has an optimal opportunity to be successful at UCI.
This is the time and the place for a strong investment in a gender-equitable environment that will shape the university for decades to come. I welcome a partnership with NSF to make this happen. I have a personal commitment to the goals of the UCI ADVANCE Program, will work diligently on its behalf and encourage widespread support from faculty and staff.
