Ethnicity and Race as Contexts for Developmental and School Engagement

Jacquelynne Eccles
Professor of Developmental Psychology
Department of Psychology
University of Michigan

January 12, 2006

"The achievement gap between Black and White students in the U.S.A. continues on many indicators of school success. In this talk, Dr. Eccles will provide an overview of several psychological theories developed to help explain this difference and will then focus on the role of racial discrimination experiences and racial identity. She will summarize findings from her longitudinal study of normative development among African American and European American adolescents living near Washington D.C. Because this sample includes a full range of SES for both populations, the impact of race-related experiences and beliefs can be statistically distinguished from the impact of race-related differences in SES.  The analyses suggest that day-to-day experiences of racial discrimination at school are a key predictor of declines in school achievement, school engagement and motivation, self-esteem and depression, as well as increases in involvement in risky behaviors.  This effect, however, is moderated by a strong culturally-based racial identity among the African American students."
