Our Lives as Women in Physical Sciences
Our Lives as Women in Physical Sciences is funded by the UCI ADVANCE Program, which goals are to foster the recruitment, retention and advancement of women and minorities in academia - ultimately increasing the number of minorities in these disciplines in the professoriate. The UCI ADVANCE program invites all graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to the "Our Lives as Women in Physical Sciences" forum, which will feature a panel of four women faculty from the School of Physical Sciences. The panel will give a short introduction of themselves and moderate an open discussion with the audience. The panel members will include Drs. Barbara Finlayson-Pitts (Chemistry), Kathleen Johnson (Earth Systems Science), Natalia Komarova (Mathematics) and Tammy Smecker-Hane (Physics & Astronomy). Although the panel members are all from the School of Physical Sciences, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in other schools are welcome to attend. The event is an informal opportunity to discuss important issues such as gender equity, questions about careers in academia, balancing the demands of research and personal life, etc. It is an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues from different departments. This is the second time this event will be held. A short summary of the interesting questions and answers that came up at the first event, which was held on March 4, 2005, are available at the School of Physical Sciences Our Lives as Women in Physical Sciences page. Natural Science II, Room 2201 The event is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
